Mauritius is a small island with turquoise seas and sandy beaches geared for tourism that provides holiday makers with everything to make their vacation memorable.

The warm climate and hospitable islanders lure visitors to return to Mauritius repeatedly. Lying east of Madagascar, its close proximity to Europe and South Africa and its reasonable prices compared with other island getaways has made it a very popular holiday destination.

The largest number of tourists each year come from the neighboring island of Reunion, followed by France, South Africa, Germany, the United Kingdom and Australia.

All Inclusive Package Deals to Mauritius

This is quite possibly the most popular way of visiting the island. Everything is laid on for the traveler who buys an all inclusive package and nothing needs to be worried over. Packages typically include a 6 night, 7 day vacation at a resort of choice. Flights, meals, some drinks are included and there are usually kids and teen clubs to keep the kids busy. Entertainment is laid on and for the more active person, water-sports, fishing, para-gliding, diving and snorkeling are on offer.

La Pirogue is an example of the various resorts on the island. The standards are known to be excellent and most hotels are highly rated.

Self Catering Accommodation in Mauritius

For those opting for a longer stay, choosing a self catering flat, house or villa is also a popular choice. The self catering accommodation usually contains everything that is needed from bedding to crockery and cutlery and some of the villas are large enough to accommodate 3 families with children.

Charges usually include a maid service with the option of employing the maid to shop for fresh produce cook authentic Mauritian cuisine as well.

Tourist Attractions Away From the Resorts

For many people, simply lazing away the days and enjoying the entertainment at the resort provides more than enough to do. However, there is a lot to see on this vibrant little island:

  • Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens. Situated 11 kilometers outside of the capital city Port Louis, these gardens are famed for the giant Victoria Amazonica water lilies and large variety of palm trees.
  • Natural History Museum. To the south of Government House, the museum houses a reconstruction of its most famously extinct bird, the Dodo, and well as other relics of natural history such as rare shells and fish.
  • Colorful, brash Port Louis Market. Open from 06.00 to 18.00 Monday to Saturday and 6.00 to 12.00 on Sundays, a morning can easily be spent meandering about at the stalls. Food stalls offer local specialties such as samosas and chili bites.
  • Port Louis Art Gallery: Situated in Mallefille Street, the displays exhibit local artists' works, with a new exhibition each month.

To sum up, Mauritius is the holiday destination of choice for many when it comes to simply soaking up the sun on white, clean beaches, engaging in water sports of every kind, big game fishing, scuba diving excursions, nature walks, enjoying the local culinary delights and shopping.
